Masking and social Anxiety: A Poem about feeling overwhelmed in crowds

Updated: Jan 3

Many people feel anxious in social situations. It can be exhausting to try to fit in, hide your true feelings, or mask who you really are. For anyone who experiences social anxiety, crowds, bright lights, and noisy environments can quickly become overwhelming. These moments can make you feel isolated, even when surrounded by others. Reading or hearing about experiences like this can help you understand that you are not alone. Anxiety, masking, and sensory overwhelm are common experiences. Acknowledging them is the first step to feeling calmer and more in control.

The Impact of Social Anxiety

Social anxiety can manifest in various ways. You might feel a tightness in your chest or a racing heart when entering a crowded room. Perhaps you find it hard to make eye contact or engage in conversations. These feelings can lead to avoidance of social situations altogether. It’s important to recognise that these reactions are valid. You are not alone in this struggle.

Understanding Your Feelings

When you experience social anxiety, it can feel like the world is closing in on you. You may worry about what others think, leading to a cycle of negative thoughts. This can be exhausting. It’s crucial to understand that these feelings are common. Many people share similar experiences.

A Poem to Reflect On

A friend of mine asked me to share this poem, as they felt it might help someone else not feel so alone. I love it and want to thank her for being brave enough to share.

The Poem: What should I do?

There are so many people.

What will they think?

What will they see?

A great big disgusting lump of a person.

Oh, that is me.

There are so many people.

What will they think?

What will they hear?

A small confused voice with nothing to say.

There are so many people.

Can they see how I feel?

My clothes feel too tight.

I cannot breathe.

I’m gonna vomit.

I need them to leave.

My throat is constricting.

What if I faint?

I continue to smile.

I can’t let them see,

I can’t let them know.

These humans around me, all bubble and light,

what do they chat about as they stand in the night?

Do they talk of adventures?

Do they talk about work?

They are starting to laugh now,

Can they see through my mask?
