Why you just can't sleep and suffer with insomnia

It’s 3am. You’re staring at the ceiling, mind racing, wondering why sleep feels so out of reach. If you’re struggling with sleep, constantly waking at night or lying awake for hours, it can feel both isolating and confusing.

Sleep and Circadian Rhythm Problems: Why you might struggle to fall asleep, wake in the night, or feel tired but wired

You might lie in bed exhausted but still unable to fall asleep. You might wake up in the night, often around the same time like 2–4am. Or you might feel completely drained but still unable to switch off.

Many people describe this as feeling “tired but wired”.

There are many possible reasons for sleep difficulties. Your circadian rhythm (your body clock) is one possible part of the picture, but it is rarely the only cause. For some people it plays a bigger role, and for others it sits alongside things like stress, routine, or daily habits.

Signs your body clock may be out of sync:

Common signs include:

  • struggling to fall asleep even when tired

  • waking up during the night or very early morning

  • waking around the same time each night (such as 3am)

  • feeling more awake at night than during the day

  • light or broken sleep

  • not feeling refreshed after sleep

Why sleep problems usually have more than one cause

It’s important to understand that sleep difficulties rarely come from just one thing.

There are usually several factors involved, such as:

  • stress and daily pressures

  • sleep habits and routines

  • lifestyle and environment

  • and sometimes your natural body clock pattern

Your circadian rhythm may be part of it, but it is usually only one piece of a wider picture.

Are you a poor sleeper?

Poor Sleepers typically:

  • Stress and get anxious worrying if they will sleep at night.

  • Go to bed early, before they feel sleepy, often ruled by the time rather than how they feel.

  • Lie awake for long periods in bed, with  racing thoughts and worry about lack of sleep.

  • Experience broken, poor quality sleep and often stay in bed later than they would like in the morning.

  • Going to bed is usually a negative, frustrating experience

How can I break the cycle?

I support people in Essex in person and throughout the UK online to uncover the cause of their insomnia.

Together we create a working plan to break free from these negative patterns. Utilising Hypnotherapy combined with CBT-I informed techniques believed to be the gold standard for insomnia (certificate of attendance oxford university). I believe working in this way gives the most effective results offering methods to analyse why your sleep is disturbed and ways to correct it including how to change your thought patterns and learn to relax.

Sometimes insomnia can be caused by a medical condition. If this is the case please seek evaluation from a GP or medical practitioner. Therapy of any kind does not remove the need for medical evaluation.
